The National Bank of Commerce (NBC) has today announced the appointment of Mizinga Melu as its new Managing Director, subject to regulatory approval. The appointment is with effect from 20th May 2013.

Mizinga is joining NBC from Standard Chartered Bank Zambia where until now she has been Managing Director since 2007. She takes over from Lawrence Mafuru, who left the bank in December, 2012.

Mizinga has previously served in senior roles at Standard Chartered, including as Global Head of Development Organisations in the United Kingdom where she was responsible for strategy development and implementation as well as Africa Regional Head of Financial Institutions in Kenya and South Africa where she led formulation of Standard Chartered’s FI business strategy in Africa. Prior, she served as Head of Treasury at Standard Chartered Bank Tanzania between 2000 and 2003.

Mizinga holds a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from Henley Management College (UK) and is an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Bankers (A.C.I.B). She holds numerous other banking qualifications.

Commenting on the appointment, Barclays Africa Chief Executive Officer and Head of Africa Group Strategy, Kennedy Bungane said: “The appointment of Mizinga reiterates the importance of NBC to our ‘One Africa Strategy’ and we are excited that she is joining us at a time we are making steady progress towards our goal of becoming the go-to bank in Africa.”

Dr. Mussa Juma Assad, Chairman of NBC commented: “The board welcomes Mizinga to NBC and looks forward to working with her in maintaining the position of NBC as a leading bank in Tanzania.”

Commenting on her appointment, Mizinga said: “NBC has over the years proven to be an important financial services provider in Tanzania. I am privileged to have the opportunity to lead this great bank at this important moment and I am looking forward to working with every colleague in NBC as we continue on our journey of transforming the bank in the market.”

Mizinga will report directly to Kennedy Bungane, Barclays Africa Chief Executive Officer and will be a member of the Barclays Africa Executive Committee.
